POLICY #1

LOWER PROPERTY TAXES

The first issue in Action Plan SA is addressing out of control property taxes for San Antonio residents.

Property taxes are out of control and the current Mayor has voted twice in the past two years against the property tax cut. San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country with a budget in excess of $2B per year. We don’t have a revenue problem, WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM. The same people telling you we can’t afford property tax cuts are the same people wasting $18,000 on curtains, going over budget by $75M on Frost Tower renovations, and spending $12M on a raccoon bridge. The money is already there, we just need the leadership to make it happen.

In his first 90 days as Mayor of San Antonio, Greg Brockhouse pledges to bring the following votes to City Council:

R

A meaningful cut in property taxes in the upcoming budget.

R

A citywide Homestead Exemption.

R

Appointing a Taxpayer Advocate to the Bexar County Appraisal District.

R

An increase in military disabled veteran property tax exemption to match the disability rating.

R

A resolution asking Governor Greg Abbott to add appraisal reform to any call he issues for a special session of the state legislature.

R

A property tax freeze for development zones to prevent gentrification and displacement.

R

Creating a new protocol to prioritize property tax abatements for existing businesses who want to grow and expand over businesses first moving to San Antonio.
